From plein air pioneers to contemporary light catchers. The exhibition 'Light, Air, Water – the painters of The Hague' is a visually rich and surprising exhibition that shows the development of painting in The Hague over two centuries from an art historical perspective. From 19th-century masters such as Andreas Schelfhout to contemporary artists such as Sebastiaan Spit: all found and continue to find inspiration in the same phenomenon – the changing coastal light of The Hague.
The classical masters such as Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, Wijnand Nuijen, Willem Roelofs, George Hendrik Breitner and Willem Bastiaan Tholen are shown alongside modernists such as Jan Mankes, Co Westerik and Willem Hussem.
The exhibition runs from 4 October 2025 until 1 March 2026.
