Wieske Wester b. 1985

Overview

In the vein of the 17th century Dutch still life tradition, artist Wieske Wester has the ability to turn the mundane into an uncanny reality. Her ‘portraits’ of food explore their subjects in their visual appearances as well as in their biological, organic and spiritual state. Eggs, poultry, fish and fruits regularly pass in review. Themes of sensuality, eroticism and decay, are executed in an artistic handwriting which is vitally guided by the power of nature and at the same time exposes that natural force.

Wieske Wester (1985, NL) obtained her BFA from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, after which she was selected for a two-year residency at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. In 2015 she graduated from the HISK in Ghent. In 2017 she was nominated for the Royal Prize for Contemporary Painting in Amsterdam. Recent solo exhibitions include 'The artist is not here, she is picking feathers' and 'Gläserner Mensch', both at Dürst Britt & Mayhew in The Hague; and solo presentations at Art Antwerp, SPARK Art Fair in Vienna, NADA Miami and Liste Art Fair Basel. Recent group exhibitions include 'The clouds are charging colour (version 1 and 2) at Dürst Britt & Mayhew; 'Human Nature/Animal Nature' at De Ateliers at Art Island Amsterdam; 'Haagse School x Haagse Nieuwe' at Museum Jan Cunen in Oss, Netherlands; and the permanent collection presentation at Lisser Art Museum (LAM) in Lisse, Netherlands.

Wester’s work is held in private and public collections, including the Lisser Art Museum (LAM) in Lisse, Netherlands; Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Ahold Collection; Rabobank Collection; Focus Abengoa Foundation, in Sevilla, Spain; and the moraes-barbosa collection in São Paulo, Brazil.
